Servicing schedule that suits Skyactiv engineering

Annually or 12,500 miles, with the correct low-viscosity Skyactiv oil, and the engines stay sweet indefinitely; they avoided both downsized turbos and wet belts, which spares Mazda owners the expensive fashions of the last decade. Diesels have the one caveat: they must be driven properly. A Skyactiv-D doing only short trips fails to complete filter regenerations, dilutes its own oil with fuel, and the level creeps up the dipstick. If your diesel’s oil level ever rises, come in, that week.

London driving and your Mazda

The characteristic London-Mazda ailment is sticking rear brake calipers, especially on cars parked outside; a caliper service at the first sign of drag saves the disc and the MPG. The i-Stop stop-start system is fussy about battery health, and a flickering i-Stop light is nearly always the battery ageing rather than a fault. Older Mazda3 and 6 rear arches deserve an annual rustproofing glance, a two-minute check that preserves four figures of value.

Buying a used Mazda?

Petrols with history are near-Toyota safe bets. Diesels: only with evidence of longer runs, so read the MOT mileage record for healthy annual distances. MX-5s: check sills for rust and history for storage; the mechanicals barely wear.
