The wet belt rule

If you remember one thing about PureTech ownership, make it this: the timing belt runs inside the engine, bathed in oil, and it degrades from both age and oil condition. Peugeot’s own guidance tightened to 6 years or around 60,000 miles for replacement, and oil changes must use exactly the approved specification, because the wrong oil actively attacks the belt. We inspect belt condition through the oil filler at every service, a two-minute check that has caught several failing belts before they blocked an oil pickup.

London driving and your Peugeot

Short trips age the belt’s oil faster, so town-only PureTechs deserve oil changes every 8,000 miles rather than the long official interval. BlueHDi diesels are genuinely good engines with two urban needs: sustained runs for the particulate filter and prompt attention to any AdBlue warning, because the countdown ends with a car that will not start, always at the worst moment.

Buying a used Peugeot?

Ask one question first: when was the wet belt done, and is there an invoice? A 2016 to 2020 PureTech without belt evidence needs £400 of work priced into your offer. Then run the MOT history check and look for oil-related advisories. Diesels: confirm motorway use in the story the mileage tells.

What it costs to run
